Work Smuck

When we moved to our acreage people told us how much work is was going to be. Our acreage is fully landscaped and we never cease to hear comments about how much work it will take to maintain it. We have acres of grass of we always hear about how much work it must take to cut it. We have a big garden and have heard the comments about how much work it takes to weed it.
Enough with the word “work” already!

It has always been my belief that what you focus on is what you will get. If you focus on things being work, they will be. When you do those things, you will feel like you have been working. Where is the fun in that?

My acreage is not work. It is fun. There is no shortage of fun to be had. What I realized as I was outside this morning pulling weeds out of my flower beds is that if it weren’t for weeds, I wouldn’t have any reason to get outside and put my hands in the dirt. I wouldn’t have any reason to get close to my flowers and really notice their fragrance and beauty. I wouldn’t receive the wonderful exchange of energy that Nature has to offer.

When one walks barefoot in the grass or has their hands in the dirt, they become grounded. All negative energy is sucked from your energy field and cleansed by the pure energies of Mother Earth. It is a very healing and relaxing process. Most people feel better after being outside in such a way as long as they don’t overdo it, drink enough water, and wear a hat! In this way, weeding becomes a very therapeutic exercise as one communes with Nature. I suppose you could say that one person’s work is another person’s medicine.

Another approach I have taken with our acreage is that I do not see it as having work to do or work that I need to do. It really doesn’t matter if the weeds grow a little taller before I pull them. It really doesn’t matter if the grass gets cut today or tomorrow. In this way I do not feel the pressure of “I should do this” or “I must do this” when I don’t want to. Instead, I do it when I want to, and I find it does get done all in good time. If only we would approach all “work” in this way and it would no longer be work. Imagine your time sensitive project that you dread as an opportunity that will make you look good. Relish in the thought of how fantastic it will turn out. Give yourself credit for the energy you are putting into it. Reward yourself with a completion gift whether it is successful or not. Ask others to join in the fun by helping you. Change the energy around it, and you can turn work into fun. This is alchemy – turning lead weight into precious gold. Nothing is off limits to the alchemy process unless you decide it is.
So go ahead and get your hands dirty this month. Make a fun date with your “work” and become the alchemist you are. There’s a party to be had. The only question is: Will you attend?
